For my emblem for multiple, I utilized McNab’s concept of 3, which represents the male and female and the interconectedness of both. Within my design there are two triangles, a small white triangle within a larger black triangle. In the midest of both of them there is a question mark. Both triangles are title at an angle that does not allow for the triangle to be interpreted as either right side up or upside down. Also, on each side of the triangle there is a bluebird in flight. Each bird is equidistant to the next.

All of these aspects of my design have meaning. The ambiguous triangle is meant to represent the push and pull between the sexes in the novel. The novel is neither purely masculine or purely feminine. It incoporates elements of each gender. The three sides of the triangle represent the three main characters who play out their lives in the Sirens of Titan. Winston Niles Rumford, Beatrice Rumford, and Malachi Constant/Unk all are interconnected and represent both a sort of love triangle and a triangle of influence. The surrounding bluebirds represent the child of Unk and Beatrice, Chronos. He is included in all three sides because Rumford orchestrates Unk’s life in order to have Chrono deliver something. I chose to represent him as a bluebird for two reasons. First he is adopted by a clan of Titanic Bluebirds on Titan and two because half of his life is spent flying through space from one planet to the next with his parents.

For my analogy for multiplicity, I found a logo that confused me. This YMCA logo:that does not follow McNab’s line of though. The triangle with a downward facing point is identified in McNab as a feminine symbol. This is strange and mildly ironic because the YMCA is the Young MEN’s Christian Association. By representing a Male organization with a female symbol, the effort is mildly counterproductive.

This is interesting because of the original intent of the Club/ Association to be a completely male entity. Why then would they pick an inherently female image. One possible reason is that they wished to matched the crutch of the Y and maintain a continuous stylistic feature. However, McNab say that when designing for a client that is required for the designer to take these things into account. All implications are the sole property of the designer. Therefore is it safe to say that it is the designers’s fault? That they merely did not consider the implication of that particular traingle? Or you could conclude that there is a deeper meaning to the reversale of roles.

Howeve, if there is a separate reason….I can not fathom it.

The design principle that I wished to engage with for my multiple emblem is the 3 or traingle presented in McNab. Within the novel the Sirens ofTitan by Kurt Vonnegut there is a triangle of relationships between Winston Niles Rumford, Beatrice Rumford, and Unk/Malichi Constant. Rumford was married to Beatrice who later bore Unk’s child. It is sort of like a love triangle, if not even a little more involved. Unk and Rumford are connected by the fact that Rumford predicts the course of Unk’s life leaving him partially bereft of self-control.

In McNab’s chapter on 3, there is a discussion of the male and female aspects of a triangle. She identifies and upward pointing triangle: as male. A downward facing triangle is then classified as purely female based on its similarity in shape to the pelvis, which is the definition of vitality and womanhood to McNab.

For my design I want a way to indicate the connection between the three characters while representing gender and the respective position of the triangle. However, the male female combination is usually combined in a fashion similar to this:

Instead I wish to produce an angl that represent both type of triangle, while only present on triangle.

In the Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut, the quality of multiplicity is abundant and evident. Calvino’s literary quality multiplicity is best described as the connections within a novel. In the Sirens of Titan the relationships create a vast web of interconnectedness. Winston Niles Rumford has a wife, Beatrice, who marries Unk, who has a child namd Chrono and so on and so forth. This connection between characters brings a deeper meaning to the text. Each character has more import because of their relationship to the others. Within all of these relationships the triangle between Rumford, Unk (Malichi Constant) and Beatrice is most important.

Multiplicity can also be applied as a quality in literature, when seen as the amount and type of background information is provided. In this respect, the Sirens of Titan is relatively unique. The entire novel is background information for the end point, which is announced by Rumford in the beginning. Therefore the entire novel is an example of multiplicty.

For visibility I decided to work with the number 4 from McNab’s design principles. It not only matched the shape of the harmoniums but also provided the sense of concrete structure. In my design, there are four harmoniums or kite shaped parallelograms that are stacked on each other in two rows. This pattern underlies the building block structure of each trope and construct inplemented in the novel. Within each parallelogram there is a picture of an anotomical heart. These hearts represent two things. The fact that the harmoniums lived off of the pulse of Boaz and the fact that trope and analogies are the life blood of literature.

By combining these two ideas, I have created a design that embodies the way in which tropes, figures, and analogies function in a work of literature. It represents how they provide structure and reinforcement through established conventions. The hearts once again act as a symbol of the way in which tropes, figures and analogies give a work of literature life. And finally the whole thing serves a dual purpose of tying a single analogy from the book into this grander sheme.

In my design I wish to have the square elements to encompass both the kite-like shape of the harmonium as well as the building block structure that tropes concot. This design uses the square and 4 is a similar way. The owl implies knowledge but the graduation hat or square conveys a sense of security and reliabilty. Any learning facility that uses a graduation cap subtly hints as assuring sucess. Therefore the square fortifies and ensures trust in the company. Also the cap along with its tail constructs a kite that is a parrallelogram with 4 sides. This indicates a playful and childlike atmoshpere that goes along nicely with the theme of the busines.

In my use of the sqaure and 4 I want to incoporate similar properties. I want to use a shape that signifies trust and reliability as well as a kite shape that links to the shape of the harmoniums. By somehow linking the two I hope I will be able to best convey the use of the quality of visibility in kurt Vonnegut’s the Sirens of Titan.

For the quality of visibility, I decided to employ McNab’s fourth design principle. There are two reasons for this. One, in the novel, the harmoniums are actually squarelike in shape. Vonnegut describes them as vaugely kite shaped. They move around like an inchworm with the suction cups at their four corners. This mildly shallow reason for choosing 4 and the square is based on the semantics of the novel.

My second reason for choosing four lies in the way in which tropes function in the Sirens of Titan. Each trope used is a sprining point for the plot. Everytime the conventions of religion or music, or popular culture occur the novel become more rich in meaning and influence. This prevalence of intertextuality acts as a bracing agent that fortifies the text like a brick or corner stone.

Combined these two reasons maynot be terrible substantial but when the design aspect underlies the quality itself it is hard to deny. The square is a concrete and assuredly visible icon. Unlike the circle or spiral it has little or no connect to the realm of imagination.

When translated into a literary quality, Calvino’s quality of visibility relates to the image presented by trope and conventions. In the course of Unk’s journey through space, he encounters creatures on Mercury that live off of rythms. The harmoniums live peacefully of of the planet’s natural song. Unk’s companion Boaz becomes enamored of the creatures and makes them a type of pets. He lets his favorite even perch on his pulse points, allowing it to thrive on his life force. This inversion of the pulse as sustaining life is interesting to me and on of the many ways a see visibility in the text.

This concention of the pulse point not only is a remastered trope but also embodies visibility in the most basic way it was described by Calvion. In his book, Italo Calvino contrasts the visible with the imaginary. Now, in my opinion, there is nothing more concrete and visible, and unimaginative than a heart beat. It is the basis of life and has little if anything to do with dreamscapes or imagination. The human heartbeat is fully seated in the real world.

For the emblem for exactitude in the Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut, I decided to implement the number 1 but inadvertenly incorporated the that is defined in the sixth chapter. However, I find my use of the spiral to be holding more with the meaning established in 1. In my design I have utilize the “beautiful proportion to formulatethe spiral. In each quarter circle of the spiral there is an image that ties to the novel and how the exspansive nature of the spiral relates to it. In the first quarter there is an image of what I suspect Malachi constant looked like before his adventures, smooth and carefree, next is Kazak, Rumford’s loyal dog, and next is a flower that represents the flowers on titan and finally water which represents the lake on titan.

By placing these images in this order, I have attempted to make a statement about time, mood, and the progression of these elements in the novel. Usually you would see a spiral as expanding outward. Instead I see this spiral as spiralling inwards. Malachi Constant in the first block symbolizes the beginning of the novel where he is a playboy and still sane. Kazak in the second block represents the exstensive space travel taken on by the characters of the novel because he accompanies Rumford on every step of his journey. The flower in the third block represents the arrival on Titan which is long awaited and bitter sweet. And the water represents the culmination of the novel and Rumford and Kazak’s disappearance by the pool.

The logo that I found for exactitude is quite different thatn the others because it incoporates a second design principle within the first chapter. The design below incorporates both the spiral and the circle. Though both concepts are in chapter one, they vary slightly in meaning. The circle is a representation of a whole or of life and the spiral means something closer to infinity. This combination is powerful. However the most interesting part of this design is the way in which colors describe the spiral. If the circles were all uniform in color there would be no spiral present. This subjectivity also realtes back to the the prescence of exactitude in the novel.

Within the novel exactitude is described by the intense mood created, and in this design is described by the colors it consists of. Also the dots, in my opinion, seem to describe the point in time that are present in the spiral of time. Each dot could represent a different time or number etc.
